National Institude of Standards and Technology (NIST) Background |
Liberty Virtual Courtroom Secure Communications For all Internet based data transmissions between computing devices, the Liberty Virtual Courtroom uses protocols and standards developed and published by the Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Such transmissions can include but are not limited to the sending of audio and video data, the sending of any files and screen captures using the system, and the sending of any text messages using the system. The foundation for the Liberty secure communications implementation is the NIST Special Publication 800-131A that is considered the definitive statement on secure communications for commercial and financial computer communications in North America and around the world. The Information Technology Laboratory (ITL) of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is one of six NIST research labs that focuses on IT measurements, testing, and standards, and is a globally recognized and trusted source of high-quality, independent, and unbiased research and data. As a world-class measurement and testing laboratory encompassing a wide range of areas of computer science, mathematics, statistics, and systems engineering, ITL s research program supports NIST s mission to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and related technology. Publications in NIST s Special Publication (SP) 800 series present information of interest to the computer security community. The series comprises guidelines, recommendations, technical specifications, and annual reports of NIST s cybersecurity activities. SP 800 publications are developed to address and support the security and privacy needs of U.S. Federal Government information and information systems. NIST develops SP 800-series publications in accordance with its statutory responsibilities under the Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA) of 2014, 44 U.S.C. ยง 3551 et seq., Public Law (P.L.) 113-283. |
